What Are the Penalties for Fraud?
The severity of a fraud penalty depends on the financial harm done to the alleged victim. Fraud can range from a Class C misdemeanor to a 1st-degree felony. Misdemeanors are punishable by a fine up to $500 where the amount of the damages is less than $20. Felonies of the 1st degree, on the other hand, are punishable by imprisonment for 5 to 99 years and a $10,000 fine where the damages are $200,000 or more.
Likewise, victims of fraud might be entitled to recover monetary damages in civil court. Depending on the type of fraud, civil courts can grant an injunction to prevent future financial harm and award a judgment against the offender for damages suffered by the victim.
