What Are the Charges and Penalties for Money Laundering?
Proving that you are guilty of money laundering depends on the prosecutor’s ability to prove that you knew about the criminal activity by which the proceeds were obtained. From there, the penalties are based on the amount of money that was involved in the alleged offense.
The following amounts will generally result in the subsequent penalties:
- Between $1,500 and $20,000: a state jail felony punishable by up to $10,000 in fines and up to two years in jail
- Between $20,000 and $100,000: a third-degree felony punishable by up to $10,000 in fines and up to 10 years in prison
- Between $100,000 and $200,000: a second-degree felony punishable by up to $10,000 in fines and up to 20 years in prison
- More than $200,000: a first-degree felony punishable by $10,000 and possible life imprisonment
